Komarov was named as prime crew commander on 4 October 1964 for the Voskhod mission,first space flight to carry more than one crewman into orbit, and was selected to command the Soyuz 1, in 1967 the module crashed into the ground, killing Komarov, who chose to fly to protect Gagarin his backup cosmonaut. The cosmonauts knew that the spacecraft had major safety problem, his backup cosmonaut, Komarov stated that if he were to refuse to fly, Gagarin would be forced to go instead.
