Units are asked to submit various projects. Colonel MASSU chooses the "dragon" (the project was designed by a non-commissioned officer). At first, we said "dragon", maybe because the dragon is the mythological animal of Vietnam and then we were in the middle of the Indochina war. The play of words was quickly found and one spoke with humor of the "Rabbit with GILLES" that one associated with the chimera. The colors of the latter are, by tradition, the same as those of the "Pegase" worn on the sleeve by SAS paratroopers; ie blue on amaranth background.

It was formally named after Shapurji Saklatvala, the former Communist Member of Parliament (MP) for Battersea. However, this name never caught on and it was normally known as the "British Battalion". The Spanish also referred to it as "el batallón británico" or "el batallón inglés". Number 1 company was later called the Major Attlee Company after the leader of the British Labour Party, who visited the British volunteers in December 1937.
